Christmas in the Salamanca district: lights, walks and plans to enjoy it

· 4 min. read · by Christie's International Real Estate Madrid

Christmas in the Salamanca district is lived on the street: lighting on roads such as Serrano, Goya and Velázquez, carefully dressed shop windows, the Craft Fair on Paseo de Recoletos and the Three Kings Parade along the Castellana. This guide brings together the confirmed 2026 dates and suggests a walk to take in the district at an unhurried pace.

When the Christmas lights are switched on in 2026

Madrid City Council has set the switch-on for Saturday 21 November 2026, at 19:30 in Plaza de Cibeles, with an opening show. The lights will stay on until 6 January 2027 and will reach more than 250 locations across the city's 21 districts, with more than 14 million LED bulbs, according to the local press. The full programme and the detailed list of streets will be published at the end of November.

The illuminated streets of the Salamanca district

Calle Serrano is the backbone of the walk. Its lighting tends to be more restrained than in the historic centre, in white and gold tones on trees, street lamps and façades. In previous campaigns the City Council has also lit Goya, Velázquez, Jorge Juan and José Ortega y Gasset, which complete the route between shop windows. Claudio Coello is another nearby street where the decoration is usually carefully done.

Last year, Calle Goya unveiled an installation by the German designer Ben Busche that simulated a sunrise. The 2026 designs will be known when the City Council publishes the official list.

One possible route, following the stretches that were lit in previous years: start at Cibeles, go up Calle de Alcalá to the Puerta de Alcalá, continue along Serrano and then cross towards Jorge Juan or Goya.

Craft Fair on Paseo de Recoletos

From 1 to 30 December 2026, Paseo de Recoletos, between Colón and Cibeles, hosts the 39th Craft Market Fair of the Community of Madrid, with around 130 workshops. The fair closes on 25 December. It is a good starting or finishing point for linking up with the walk of lights, since from there you can continue on foot towards Cibeles and the rest of the Salamanca district.

The Three Kings Parade along the Castellana

On 5 January 2027 the Three Kings Parade runs along the Castellana axis and Paseo de Recoletos to Plaza de Cibeles, crossing the Salamanca district. esMadrid announces the parade from 18:00 to 21:00; the exact route this year is yet to be confirmed.

To round off the walk: dinner and culture

If you would like to end the evening with a reserved table, take a look at the Michelin-starred restaurants of the Salamanca district. And for a cultural visit, the Museo Lázaro Galdiano, at Serrano 122, features in our guide to house museums in Madrid. It is closed on Mondays and on 24, 25 and 31 December.

When to walk in peace

The day of the switch-on and December weekends are the busiest. On weekdays, at dusk, the walk is quieter.
